A traditional Sri Lankan manna: a heavy curved carbon-steel blade of about 26.8cm fitted to a plain turned wooden handle with a metal ferrule. It is made for the rough work a kitchen knife cannot take — chopping and splitting coconuts, jackfruit, breadfruit, banana stems, pumpkin, meat on the bone and firewood. Suits hotel and restaurant back-of-house prep, caterers working with whole produce, and home kitchens that still cut the old way.
